   A client walked into my consulting room yesterday and, breathing in, said “ah, essential oils.”.  He was quite right.  One of the things that I do to provide a comfortable and welcoming space for people is to diffuse a mix of essential oils into the room before they arrive.

So we had a bit of a conversation about essential oils and when I thought about it later, I decided that,  if I was only allowed one oil, lavender would be my most essential.

Lavender essential oil is good for so many things.  It is my number one burn remedy.  Keep a bottle in your kitchen for those times when you catch your arm on an oven shelf or drip something very hot on yourself.  DO NOT run it under cold water.  No!  Instead, immediately apply some neat lavender oil to the burn area and you will feel immediate relief.  And, even better than that, you will have no livid red scar.  It’s true – don’t take my word for it, try it yourself.

Sleep is another thing that lavender oil can help with.  It has a very soothing effect.  A couple of drops in your child’s bedtime bath water can work wonders to settle them down and encourage them to sleep.  And for people who find it hard to drop off to sleep, a drop of lavender oil on your pillow may help.

Don’t think more is better though, I have learned, through unfortunate experience, that four or five drops in the bath can have the opposite effect on one’s children!  And more than one drop on the pillow at night might have your eyes streaming!

If your eyes are streaming through a cold, or flu or some other bacterial or viral illness, however, diffusing lavender oil  into the room is an excellent idea. Lavender oil has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties and it can boost the immune system.

A 10ml bottle of lavender oil will cost you around £5 and, as you only use it a couple of drops at a time, it will last you for ages (unless you are particularly accident-prone!).  My recommendation is, buy yourself a bottle now and no, I am not selling it! – you can get good quality lavender oil from most health food shops.

   Did you know that one in five people suffers from hay fever these days?  Well, not these days, obviously, it’s winter now – between March and November.

Just think back to last summer for a moment … who do you remember who was constantly sneezing and had red watery eyes?  You can probably remember more than one.

And those symptoms are from the outside looking in.  On the inside, there’s the constantly blocked or running nose and … the itching … which could be in the eyes, or throat, or mouth, or nose or even in the ears.  And some people lose their sense of smell, have facial pains, sweats, and headaches.

The symptoms of hay fever can make people miserable.  When you’re suffering, it can be difficult to concentrate or to sleep properly.  All in all, hay fever is not a problems to be sniffed at (sorry, couldn’t resist).

So, why am I writing about it now, I hear you ask, when no-one is suffering from hay fever?  I’m writing about it now because now is the time to get homeopathic treatment for hay fever so that, maybe, the symptoms will be reduced this season.

   So it’s happened.  I have a cold.  And not just any old cold, a really bad cold.  It could even be described as a “man-cold” … although maybe that’s exaggerating just a tad.

Whatever, it is a seriously kick-ass cold.

Ha ha!  I hear you cry.  Doesn’t she listen to her own advice?  Take her own medicine?  Yes I do, and I did and still, I have a really prolific and productive cold.

So, I can only assume that this cold is meant to be and the best thing I can do is to help myself do it as well as I possibly can.  And that’s what I’ve been doing.  I’ve been dosing myself with hot toddies (Kim’s Secret Hot Toddy Recipe) and homeopathic remedies, drinking gallons of lovely cold water and resting.

And just today I have started to feel really quite excited because I know, when I’ve finished doing this cold, I’m going to feel great.  Because I do trust my body, that it is behaving intelligently and is getting rid of stuff I don’t need as expeditiously as possible.

So, if you too have a cold, do it as well as you can and take heart – you will feel better than you did before you had it when it has run its course.

    Of course, we all know that some people will say the best way to ensure that we don’t have a hangover is “avoid alcohol altogether” and where’s the fun in that?  The next best way is to “take more water with it”, as my granny used to say.  I think in my granny’s day, that referred to whiskey and the dilution of such.

Water can, in fact, be a huge help in the prevention of hangovers as dehydration is the biggest culprit in that banging head, slightly nauseous feeling.  Making sure that you are well-hydrated before you go out and remembering to have at least half a pint of water in between anything else you are drinking, will go a long way to helping you feel OK the next day.

And then there’s the homeopathic remedy nux vomica – know in homeopathic circles as “the hangover remedy”.  If you know you are likely to be drinking more alcohol than usual, take a nux vom before you go out.  Then take one when you get back in, drink at least half a pint of water (a pint if you can manage it) and have another nux vom before you go to bed.

Hopefully, when you wake in the morning you will feel OK.  If you are still feeling a bit the worse for wear, have more water (a pint would be favourite), a glass of orange juice and another nux vom.  In fact you can take a nux vom every hour until you do feel better.

You can get nux vomica from most health food shops, direct from Helios or Ainsworths homeopathic pharmacies or even most Boots stores.  Nux vomica 30 is what you want.

   Nobody, right? Or do you? If you think about it, colds tend to occur at specific times of the year – Winter and Spring – and it’s possible that a cold is your body’s way of adjusting to the new season. So maybe the best thing to do when you get a cold is to take a couple of days off work and look after yourself. Get plenty of rest and sleep, drink plenty of water and orange juice (packed full of vitamin C) and maybe even treat yourself to a warming hot toddy (recipe coming in tomorrow’s blog). This will give your body the best possible chance to do what it needs to prepare itself for the oncoming season.

Homeopathy can help with cold and flu symptoms, in fact there are over thirty different medicines that can help with flu and many more that may help with a cold.  Here are the details of the three most commonly used homeopathic cold and flu medicines – if your symptoms fit, give the medicine a try.  If none of these seem to fit your symptoms, take a look here where there are many more to choose from.

Aconite: You really want to keep this one in your medicine cupboard because it is a great remedy for nipping a cold or flu in the bud when the symptoms have come on quickly. Take it as soon as you notice the first symptoms – which is likely to be after you have been out in the cold. You will have lots of sneezing with pain at the root of your nose.  Your mucous membranes will be dry, you may have lots of shivering, feel quite anxious and feel worse in the evening or at night.

Ferrum phos: This medicine may help when your symptoms come on gradually. You may have a sore throat and a feeling that the cold is going to affect your ears or your chest.  You may feel weak and leathargic and have a flushed face and your eyes may be red and burning.

Gelsemium: This is the most commonly used homeopathic medicine for flu – you have the common flu symptoms of feeling heavy, lethargic and dull, your limbs ache, you feel dull and you may have shivers running up and down your back.
