It’s that time of year again – when the bangs, cracks and whizzes of increasingly spectacular fireworks conspire to terrify the nation’s pets!
Our cat, Tabby, positions herself as close as she can get to the cupboard under the breakfast bar – quite a clever place to go if you’re expecting the roof to fall in. Ebony is a bit more cool about it but certainly doesn’t want to be outside.
So, what can you do if your pet is freaked out by fireworks? Well, a very simple thing is to get some Bach’s Rescue Remedy which you can get from Holland and Barrett in liquid or spray form. If you get the liquid, just put a few drops in their water from about midday and you can use the spray at the time that they start shaking in their fur – just spray a little in your pet’s mouth if you can and if not, just on their fur.
Homeopathic remedies can also help – phosphorus is a good remedy if your pet tends to be sensitive, anxious and needing reassurance. Borax can be helpful for pets that startle easily even if the noise seems quite far away. Put one pill in their drinking water first thing in the morning and, if they finish the water, add another one when you give them some more.
